Ninilchik resident Fred H. McAlmond died Friday, Aug. 31, 2001, at South Peninsula Hospital in Homer. He was 83.

A gathering of family and friends will be held at noon today at his home in Ninilchik.

Mr. McAlmond was born March 20, 1918, in Calexaco, Calif. He moved to Alaska in 1974, residing in North Pole. There, he worked for C-and-H Builders for a short time before he and his wife, Verda, started McAlmond Insulation. They moved to Anchorage and continued their business. They sold the business and retired in 1984, and then moved to Ninilchik.

Mr. McAlmond enjoyed gardening, traveling, making his friends and family laugh and was a master at telling risque stories.

"The last 33 years I've spent with Fred have been absolutely beautiful. He was one in a million," his wife said. "I feel very fortunate to have been able to be part of his life."

Mr. McAlmond is survived by his wife, a son, a daughter, five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the charity of the donor's choice.
