Odie's use to be known for the biggest sandwich in town, and now at the Peninsula Center Mall in Soldotna, Odie's is known for the brightest and widest variety of beads around.

Due to health problems, Odie closed the sandwich shop about a year ago, and as she started feeling better, decided to move her first love, the crafts portion of the shop, over to the Mall. "I'm having a lot of fun with the new store. I've always loved to sew and do crafts, and the beads are an extension of that," said Odie.

Since ancient times glass beads have been valued greatly by mankind dating back thousands of years to Africa and Europe where they were commonly used as currency and for trade, as well as for their decorative beauty. The cost of beads today range from penny beads to hundred dollar beads, and are used for everything from cute kids bracelets to expensive gold and silver jewelry.

"All the years that our kids were growing up we taught them how to make things with beads, there is a gentleness to it that taught them patience, creativity, and a sense of fulfillment of making something beautiful then giving it to someone.

That's where our slogan came from, Where you bead it yourself," said Odie. Helping customers learn the simple art is Odie's favorite part of her business, "You can do it, and we help everyone learn how to do it. We sit them down and they are always amazed at how simple and how much fun it is to make things that look so complicated, and I'm amazed at how creative people become," added Odie.
