The Kenai Central High School football team quickly found its land legs Saturday, defeating Kodiak 28-14 in a Northern Lights Conference game in Kodiak.

The Kardinals, who took advantage of the long weekend to travel to Kodiak by ferry, scored a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter to take a 15-0 lead.

After a scoreless first quarter, Isaia Faumui put the Kardinals on the board with a 3-yard touchdown plunge 4:08 into the second quarter.

With 4:36 remaining in the half, Kenai's Brandon Miles latched on to a pass from Tyler Chappell for a 39-yard touchdown play. While Ju Kim connected for the extra point on the first score, Marcus Mena caught a pass from Luke Oliver for a two-point conversion on the second Kenai touchdown.

The Kardinals added another score late in the third quarter as Chappell scampered for a 4-yard touchdown, and the kick from Kim gave Kenai a 22-0 lead with 4:39 left in the frame.

The Bears finally connected for a touchdown with 1:46 left in the third quarter as Stuart McFarland found Curtis Catt for the 13-yard score, and Kodiak made the two-point conversion.

Kenai tacked on an insurance touchdown early in the fourth quarter, though, as Chappell broke free for a 52-yard score.

Kodiak got one more touchdown on a 34-yard pass from McFarland to Clyde Valdez.

Kenai, now 2-2 overall and 1-0 in conference play, will face Skyview Friday. Kodiak (1-3, 1-2) will visit Homer Saturday.
