New high school opens
The Kenai Peninsula Borough School District is opening a new high school called Peninsula Optional High School. This is a standards-based, self-paced, student-driven school for the student seeking a different approach to high school. It has opened a new office to serve the Kenai and Nikiski area. It is in the portable behind Kenai Middle School. The kindergarten through 12 grade adviser is Natalie Kant. Debbie Allen is the secretary. Office hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fridays. For more information, call 714-8915.
Michael Hanson is the new elementary school adviser to the Soldotna office and Gabe Evins joins Bob VanDerWege as a high school adviser.
DIBELS/CBM assessments for grades kindergarten through third will be today through Sept. 21. Call for appointment.

WorldStrides Splash into Science trip to Florida will be held during spring break for grades seven through 12. There will be a 1.0 high school credit.
Kaleidoscope School of Arts and Science
The PTA will meet Thursday at 6 p.m. The position of treasurer is available.
The APC will have a work session meeting Monday at 5 p.m. The general APC meeting will follow at 6 p.m. and parents are invited. Agenda items include a before-school program and enrollment for 2008-09.
A schoolwide Curriculum Night will be held Sept. 11 at 6:30.
To volunteer in the school or on field trips, parents will need to attend the the school's volunteer training Sept. 12 at 9:20 a.m. and Sept. 19 at 6:30 p.m.
T-shirts are available for $13, crewneck sweatshirts for $20 and hooded sweatshirts are $25. Order forms are at the office and due back Sept. 20.
Barbecue and open house will be held Thursday at 5:30 p.m. Edline activation codes will be handed out during the barbecue.
Activity night and dance will be held Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. The cost is $3.
The Character Counts winners from last week are: Acacia Fisher and Sky Schlung.
The school is collecting General Mills Box Tops. Bring tops to the office with your name on the back for a chance at winning a soda.
School pictures will be taken Friday. Picture packets went out last week. If your child did not receive one, send them to the office for a packet.
The sixth-grade carwash is Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. You can purchase a ticket from sixth-graders or call the office at 283-4896.
Mountain View Elementary
A Title I committee meeting will be held at 8 a.m. Thursday at the school. Parents are invited to attend to discuss Title I. For more information, call Katy Bethune or Kristin Morrow at 283-6148.
The school is enrolling students in grades kindergarten through 12. It is located at 44109 Sterling Highway, Suite A, in Soldotna, same building as Don Jose's restaurant. It is open 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. There are no fees to enroll. Enrollment is available at www.ravenschool.com.

Parents interested in Title I are invited to the school's annual Title I meeting Monday at 3:45 p.m. in the library.
Today begins homecoming week. Break and lunch activities are planned all week. On Friday homecoming royalty will be crowned at the homecoming assembly beginning at 1:55 p.m. Friday night will be the annual bonfire. Saturday homecoming royalty will be presented at halftime. The week concludes with a dance Saturday night from 7:45 to 10:45 p.m. Parents wishing to help chaperone the dance are encouraged to attend.
The library needs volunteers to assist during the student's lunch. Positions are available Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Call Mrs. Druce or Mrs. Hibpshman at 260-7036.
The site council will meet Sept. 11 at 5 p.m.

Soldotna Montessori Charter School
The school welcomes its students and families back and also welcome its newest staff members: Audra Farris, kindergarten specialist; and Matt Farris, grades four, five and six.
On Friday evening the annual fall family-school picnic will be held at Agrium Park in Soldotna from 4 to 7 p.m. Sign-up sheets for picnic items are posted in the hallway. The event is a way to bring school staff and families together.
Volunteers are needed for activities or events that go on throughout the school year. Interested families are asked to return the form sent home last Thursday.
Due to technical difficulties Tustumena Elementary School briefs are not available.
