ANCHORAGE (AP) -- A 52-year-old North Pole man was mauled by a bear Tuesday morning while hunting in the Interior.

Alaska State Troopers said Johnny L. McCoy was attacked by a grizzly sow near the junction of the Little Delta River and Buchanan Creek, southwest of Delta Junction.

McCoy's hunting partner, Gary R. Corle of North Pole, told troopers the sow was with two cubs. Corle, 59, was knocked to the ground in the attack but was able to fire a shot. Troopers said the shot apparently missed the sow.

About 12:45 p.m., an Army helicopter landed at the site and transported McCoy to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital. Tuesday evening, a nursing supervisor at the hospital said McCoy was undergoing surgery but had no other information regarding his condition.
