Democrat drops from Eagle River senate race

Posted: Thursday, September 05, 2002

ANCHORAGE (AP) -- Mitch Schapira has been nominated to run as the Democratic candidate for Senate District P in November, the Alaska Democratic Party said Wednesday.

Schapira replaces Anchorage Democrat Ken Ziegahn who withdrew from the race. Schapira will face Rep. Con Bunde, R-Anchorage, for the open Senate seat that includes Eagle River and Hillside.

Bunde and Ziegahn each were unopposed in their party's Aug. 27 primary race. Bunde has been in the state House since 1992.

Zeigahn said Wednesday he dropped out of the race because he has accepted a new job as dean of grades 9-12 at Pacific Northern Acadamy in Anchorage. He said in a statement that he supports Schapira in the election.
