Photography show deadline today

Entries are being accepted for "Alaska Positive 2002," a juried exhibition of Alaska photography sponsored by the Alaska State Museum, in Juneau. Entries must be received at the museum by 4:30 p.m. today. The exhibition will remain at the museum through Feb. 16. A statewide tour will follow.

Donated art needed for Pratt show

The Pratt Museum is seeking donated entries for the "Ritz2002 Art Show." The show will be on display at the museum from Sept. 27 through Nov. 2. Anchorage artist Steve Gordon will be critiquing the artwork and selecting several pieces to be awarded prizes. There will be a review reception with awards for participating artists in mid-October.

The Pratt Museum will display all donated artwork in the show. All pieces must be at the museum by Sept. 20. The show's gala and auction will be held Nov. 2 at the museum. Participating artists may choose to receive a 40 percent ticket discount. A volunteer position as assistant for planning and installing the show is available.

Poems sought in contest

A poetry contest is being held this month for new poems. A $1,000 grand prize is offered, with $50,000 in prizes to be awarded in the coming year. To enter, send one poem 21 words or less to Celestial Arts, P.O. Box 1140, Talent, Ore., 97540. Or enter online at www.freecontest.com. The deadline is Sept. 20. A name and address must be on the page with the poem. A winners list will be sent to all entrants.

Pratt Museum changes schedule

The Pratt Museum will begin its winter hours Sept. 20. The museum will be open Tuesday through Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. The business office will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The museum will be closed Sept. 16 through Sept. 19 as exhibits are changed. The business office will be open for normal hours of operation during that time to receive submissions for the "Ritz2002 Art Show."

Admission to the museum will be half price from Sept. 20 to Sept. 27 as the Ritz show is installed. As always, museum members receive free admission and may bring as many as two guests at no charge.

Auditions held for symphony

The Anchorage Symphony Orchestra is holding auditions for string players for the 2002/2003 concert season. There are permanent openings for violin one and two, viola, cello and assistant principle string bass players. Auditions will be Sept. 23 and Sept. 26 from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. at the Atwood Concert Hall in Anchorage.

Auditioning musicians should be ready to perform musical excerpts provided by the Anchorage Symphony Orchestra and an allegro movement from a concerto of their choice. Some sight reading may be required.

Approximately 80 orchestra musicians are required for the six classical concerts scheduled this season. The orchestra will perform for the Anchorage Concert Association's production of "The Nutcracker," two Young People's Concerts and a Halloween Family Concert as well.

Watercolor submissions wanted

The Kenai Fine Arts Center will host a juried open watercolor show during October. Artists can submit up to two paintings for a fee of $10 per entry. All Alaska artists are invited to participate.

Paintings should be original works that have been completed within the last two years. Paintings can be submitted by mail to Kenai Fine Arts Center, 816 Cook St., Kenai, AK, 99611 or delivered in person to the center beginning Sept. 23 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

The deadline for submission will be 4 p.m. Sept. 30. The Kenai Fine Arts Center is not responsible for damage or loss of submitted art, whatever the cause.

A reception and official opening of the show will be Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. The juror for the show will be Paula Dickey of Homer. Awards will be given for best in show and first through third place.
