KODIAK (AP) -- A Kodiak Island Borough official has been selected to be the city of Kodiak's new city manager.

Linda Freed, Kodiak Island Borough community development director, prevailed over 23 other applicants for the position. The city council approved her in a 4-3 vote last week.

Freed has been a borough employee for 20 years. She was a finalist for the borough manager position last year.

She was named Alaska Municipal Employee of the Year in 1996 by the Alaska Municipal League, and Pubic Administrator of the Year in 1990 by the Alaska Associa-tion of Public Administrators.

Freed will replace city manager Bill Jones, who leaves the position Sept. 30, after six years on the job.
