State seeks comments on exit exam scores

The State Board of Education and Early Development will meet Friday and Saturday in Anchorage and is soliciting public comment on issues including:

The High School Graduation Qualifying Exam passing scores;

Immunizations;

The definition of correspondence study; and

Regulations regarding exceptional children.

The public comment period is Friday, beginning at 10 a.m. You can comment via your Legislative Information Office or at the meeting at 4600 DeBarr Road.

School board meets Monday

The Kenai Peninsula Borough School District's Board of Education meets Monday at 7:30 p.m. in the Borough Building in Soldotna. All school board meetings are open to the public.

Students invited to enter poster contest

Frontier Community Services in Soldotna is sponsoring a poster contest to raise public awareness of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, the 100-percent preventable birth defect that devastates many lives in Alaska.

The contest is open to 10 to 17 year olds. A $100 U.S. Savings Bond is the top prize. Second wins $75 and third $50. The entry deadline is Sept. 15.

Bookworms invited to reading contest

The annual Battle of the Books has announced its list of books for the 2000-01 school year. The contest, sponsored by the statewide association of school librarians, challenges students in any grade and any school or home school to thoroughly read quality books for young people. Tournaments will be held in the spring.
