ANCHORAGE (AP) -- A toddler from Kotlik died after she apparently drowned in the Kotlik slough, Alaska State Troopers said Wednesday.

Troopers said 21-month-old Winnifred Aparezuk apparently walked out the front door of her home Tuesday and into the slough 75 feet away.

The girl's parents, 28-year-old Winnifred Duny and 33-year-old Hermes Aparezuk, had been visiting child's grandmother's house when Hermes Aparezuk returned home with the little girl, troopers said.

Aparezuk was using the bathroom when he heard the front door open, troopers said.

He told troopers the girl was gone for only a few minutes before he left the house and started searching for her.

He checked at the girl's grandmother's house and then at the slough, where the girl's body was found.

Resuscitation efforts failed to revive the child.
