The Birch Ridge/Kenai Golf Association tournament is Saturday and Sunday. Players play one round at Kenai and one round at Birch Ridge. Entry fee is $65 and includes greens fees for both courses, plus a barbecue at Birch Ridge following the final round Sunday.
There are four men's flights: championship, first flight, second flight and third flight, and one women's flight. To enter golfers must be a member of either the Kenai Golf Association or Birch Ridge Golf Association, and have an established handicap. For golfers 14 and under, there is a separate junior flight.
Twenty-five gents showed up for a cloudy but rain-free night on Aug. 28 for the last official men's night. Four teams tied at 4-under with Rob "Pizza Boy" Smithwick claiming victory for the winning team by chipping close. Joining Rob on the team were Skip Dove and Richard Martin.
Gary Stackhouse repeated his performance of the previous week by showing his skills and prowess on the short game. Gary bettered his shot from the previous week by putting his shot within 6 feet, 5 inches on No. 8, and also was the master on No. 6 by placing it within 24 feet, 11 inches.
Edging the nearest competitor for long drive by over 20 yards, Nick Horn's drive on the first hole flew over 300 yards and was within 15 yards of the green. Yes, the team birdied the hole.
Sept. 5 is the final event of the year, the Chip and Putt Supper.
Tuesday Morning Glories
The Tuesday Morning Glories had the end-of-season tournament with numerous concluding events. The winning best ball team included Pat Bird, Chiya Bizan, Jane Tongen and Kathi Neilson. Pat Bird, with Chiya Bizan, tied for low gross, while Pat Bird and Jane Tongen tied for low net. The least number of putts went to Jan Stenga and Kathi Neilson.
Closest on No. 5 was Lynne Reynolds, while Chiya Bizan took home honors on No. 6 and Jane Tongen on No. 8. Lynne Reynolds, Chiya Bizan and Pat Bird shared the day with the most pars.
Chiya and Pat had a spectacular Tuesday! Rumor has it they've both signed up for the combined Birch Ridge/Kenai Golf Association tournament this weekend. We'll be watching!
