Creating charter schools and supporting parents who want to home school their children has been a long time passion for certified teacher Leona Oberts. “Teaching has always been dear to my heart. I started the Aurora Borealis charter school and this is just another step where I can be involved with helping our community and supporting education,” said Oberts who has just opened the Cornerstone book store in the Peninsula Center Mall. The purpose of the new store according to Oberts is to support teachers and home school families with the type of learning aids and educational materials needed for a good education. “I have a lot of materials for new teachers, classroom decorations, bulletin board materials, organizational books for the teacher, as well as home school materials and supplements for math, science, and language arts. Additionally we are an approved vendor for the Connections program, Idea program, and Raven correspondence,” says Oberts.

As a community service Cornerstone book store is planning a children’s literature section, “With the Harry Potter phenomenon, reading has become very exciting and we want to expand that excitement because once a child gets turned on to reading they will be life-long learners,” added Oberts. Cornerstone bookstore will also offer a Japanese animation and Mongo selection from Japan modeled after the popular children’s television program.

Oberts says she is planning a grand opening celebration for the Cornerstone bookstore in conjunction with some other Peninsula Mall merchants Sunday, September 11th from 12:00pm to 4:00pm. The grand opening will feature lots of door prizes for families and will be a great opportunity to get familiar with the new store. Leona admits she is having a lot of fun putting the store together, “I am having a blast and I’ve already gotten a lot of positive feed back from teachers as well as home school families regarding the materials we have available,” said Oberts. The Cornerstone bookstore is located in the front corner of the Peninsula Center Mall where the First National Bank was once located.
