Costo joins competition for thrifty gas buyers

ANCHORAGE (AP) -- Discount club store Costco has joined the competition for thrifty gas buyers.

Costco on Thursday opened its first Alaska gas station at its east Anchorage location. The price per gallon for unleaded was $1.53, about 2 cents lower than competitors.

A second station is scheduled to open as soon as next week at Costco's south Anchorage location.

Buying gas at the station requires the $45 annual Costo membership card, which is used to activate the pump. The station has no attendant's hut because it takes no cash, only major credit cards.

Gas stations nationwide sell an average of 100,000 to 125,000 gallons of gas a month. Costco's 140 gas stations sell about four times that.
