'Road rage' article left wrong impression; no names used

Posted: Tuesday, September 07, 2004

The Aug. 29 front page article "Road rage" created some unfortunate impressions which I wish to correct. Although the article was factually correct, it gave the impression that individual members of the Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly were mentioned by name in my comments to the Soldotna City Council on Aug. 25. This is not correct as Assembly President Pete Sprague and the Clarion reporter, who were present at the council meeting, can verify.

I wish to offer my apology to assembly member Grace Merkes for any discomfort the article produced, since she believed I spoke about her by name. The article accurately connected my assembly report on the meeting, regarding assembly member comments with Mrs. Merkes from either the public, tax-supported radio broadcast of her comments or from being present at the assembly meeting and hearing them. I did not mention her or any other assembly member during my report about assembly comments regarding my testimony directed by the city council.

Again, I apologize to Mrs. Merkes for the impression the article left. Civility among public servants must be maintained.

Dave Carey

Soldotna mayor
