Trooper sting cites Germans for fishing over the limit

Alaska Wildlife Troopers caught eight Germans visitors taking two times the bag limit last Sunday.

Lt. Glenn Godfrey said that troopers had received calls about "foreigners" taking more than the bag limit and snagging salmon over the past three years by Swanson River in Nikiski.

To investigate, trooper dressed in plain clothes observed the group take the limit, leave, return in different clothing and take another bag limit.

Godfrey suspected that the visitors changed their clothing in an attempt to disguise themselves.

"Sometimes they change locations," the lieutenant said. "We got lucky this time."

Godfrey said that his department tries to do undercover investigations like this one a few times each year, but it requires a good amount of time to send a trooper to the suspected crime scene for a full day of plain clothes work.

"He just meandered around and hung out in the area. He probably fished, ate lunch, had a picnic," he said.

The trooper issued citations, which have all been paid at the Kenai District Court.

Godfrey said that the Wildlife Troopers sport fish patrol has issued 124 citations this year.
