FAIRBANKS (AP) -- Carleta Lewis, a former North Pole mayor and city council member, has died at age 65.

Lewis died Wednesday evening at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Lewis served as mayor of North Pole for a total of 15 years, and more recently a term on the city council.

Lewis often recalled her early days in office in the mid-1970s, when the city had only 365 residents and was run from the proceeds of a half-mill property tax. None of the streets were paved.

The city now has a police and fire deparment, and water and sewer service to many subdivisions.

Though she gained some notoriety in recent years after an ethics complaint and a failed effort to recall her from office, many people credit Lewis with spearheading improvements to the city during her years as mayor.
