Power outage hits area

A power outage left most of Homer Electric's service area without electricity Saturday around 9 a.m.

The outage was due to a problem at Chugach Electric's Beluga Power Plant, which provides power to Homer Electric. The exact cause of the problem is not yet known, but the system is being evaluated.

Anyone who did not regain power is asked to call their nearest Homer Electric Office, in Kenai at 283-5831, Homer at 235-8551 or toll free at (800) 478-8551.

Radiothon set for Monday

The Kenai Women's Resource and Crisis Center, along with radio station KSRM, will host its 18th annual radiothon Monday. WRCC is seeking volunteers to serve as remote team members. Remote teams contact area businesses for cash and in-kind donations that support WRCC victim services.

Toastmasters meeting scheduled

SBDC to host money finding seminar

The Small Business Development Center will offer a seminar entitled "Finding the Money: Strategies and Sources of Capital," Thursday from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Red Diamond Center, Suite 16. Cost of the seminar is $15. For more information, call 262-7497.

United Way to hold public reception

The Kenai Peninsula United Way will host a free community reception to kick off its 2002 fund-raising campaign. The reception will be held Thursday at the Kenai Senior Citizens Center from 6 to 8 p.m. The evening will feature door prizes, refreshments and entertainment. For more information, call 283-9500.

Senior driving class offered

The AARP defensive driving class, "55 Alive," will be offered to anyone 50 years and older at 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Kenai River Center. The course can help reduce auto insurance rates and improve driving records. Cost is $10. For more information, call Vivian Swanson at 260-3966.

Nikiski community dinner planned

A community dinner will be held Saturday at the Nikiski Senior Citizens Center. Dinner will include a salad, entree, dessert and beverages. Cost is $10 for adults, $7.50 for seniors and $5 for children. Kids under 5 get in free. For more information, call 776-7654.

Open house slated at PenDOG

The Peninsula Dog Obedience Group will hold an open house to celebrate National Dog Week on Sept. 28 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at its facility in Soldotna.

There will be demonstrations in agility, tracking and the different levels of obedience, plus guest speakers and information ranging from guide dogs to what to do with your pet in a disaster. Refreshments and drawings also are planned. For more information, call 262-6846 or 283-7515.
