NEW YORK (AP) David Wells took a shutout into the eighth inning, and Bernie Williams broke a scoreless tie in the seventh with his first home run since mid-August, leading New York over the Red Sox 3-1 Sunday in a thrilling finale to a three-game series between the AL East rivals.
Wells (13-6) sparkled for 7 1-3 innings on Sunday and he needed to the way Jeff Suppan (1-2) was pitching for the Red Sox. New York's sputtering offense forced Boston's outfield to handle just four balls in the first six innings Derek Jeter's single in the fourth and three weak flyouts.
MINNEAPOLIS Torii Hunter hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th inning off Francisco Cordero (4-7) to give Minnesota its fifth straight win.
The Twins kept pace with the Chicago White Sox, who completed a three-game sweep of Cleveland. The Twins and White Sox, tied for first place in the AL Central, open a four-game series at Chicago Monday night.
CHICAGO Frank Thomas hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the seventh to lift Chicago over Cleveland.
Dan Wright and five Chicago relievers held down the Indians, who have dropped six straight.
Baez (1-8) threw 1 2-3 innings, giving up three runs and two hits while walking two and striking out one.
Scott Schoeneweis (3-2) got two outs for the win. Damaso Marte pitched a scoreless eighth and Tom Gordon a scoreless ninth for Chicago.
Royals 3, Angels 0
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) Paul Abbott and Jeremy Affeldt combined on a five-hitter and Aaron Guiel and rookie Ken Harvey homered for Kansas City.
The Royals remained three games behind Minnesota and Chicago in the AL Central race after earning a split of the four-game series.
In his fifth start since undergoing shoulder surgery last summer, Abbott (1-0) allowed five hits over seven innings. He struck out three and walked none.
Affeldt pitched two innings for his third save.
Guiel homered off John Lackey (9-14).
Devil Rays 11, Athletics 2
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) Victor Zambrano pitched his first career complete game and Tampa Bay once again roughed up Barry Zito, beating Oakland.
Zambrano (10-8) gave up nine hits, walked none and struck out eight in his 35th major league start. He became just the fourth Tampa Bay pitcher ever to win 10 or more games in a season.
Zito (11-12), the 2002 AL Cy Young winner, was tagged for seven runs and six hits over 5 1-3 innings.
Blue Jays 8, Tigers 0
TORONTO (AP) Frank Catalanotto homered twice and Josh Towers pitched seven scoreless innings as Toronto beat Detroit.
The Blue Jays, who swept the three-game series, shut out Detroit for the second straight game. The Tigers haven't scored a run in 22 innings and have been blanked an AL-high 15 times this season.
Towers (5-1) allowed just four hits, while striking out five and walking none.
Chris Mears (0-2) got the loss.
Orioles 2, Mariners 1
BALTIMORE (AP) Pat Hentgen allowed five hits in eight innings and Brian Roberts kept up his assault on Seattle pitching as Baltimore beat the Mariners.
Roberts went 2-for-4 and capped a two-run third inning against Freddy Garcia with an RBI single.
Hentgen (6-7) struck out three and walked two. Over his last two starts, the 1996 Cy Young Award winner has given up just one run and eight hits in 16 innings.
Jorge Julio worked the ninth for his 32nd save, the second in two games.
Hentgen got the better of Garcia (11-14), who allowed only four hits and one earned run in seven innings.
