Sterling seniors net successful salmon and sweeps events

Posted: Monday, September 08, 2003

Congratulations to the 22 winners of the Sterling Senior Center's recent "Sweeps" drawing and dinner during the month of August. These 22 winners shared in the drawing give away of $15,000.

Thank you to all who purchased tickets, sold tickets, volunteered to work at the dinners and helped in any way to make this another successful fund-raiser for the Sterling area senior citizens.

The Sterling seniors announce the winners in the Sockeye Salmon Count Classic that ended Aug. 7 at midnight. This is a game where you guess the number of sockeye salmon that will enter the Kenai River as of a certain date, this year being Aug. 7. The official count on that date was 1,153,774 sockeye salmon entering the river. Donna Higgins' guess was closest at 1,153,550; Larry Erickson was second with a guess of 1,154,000; and Laurel Barber was third with a guess of 1,154,045. These winners shared proceeds of $922.00. Thanks to all who purchased tickets for this event. Look for even more prizes to be offered next year.
