ANCHORAGE (AP) -- Independence Mine is closed to the public for the year.
Mine tours ended for the season Sunday.
Independence Mine State Historical Park remains open, according to state parks officials. But the mine visitors center is officially closed and so are all mine buildings, which are open only for public tours, said Dennis Heikes, area parks superintendent.
Heikes said the public can still hike around the park and mine buildings.
A $5 day use parking fee will remain in place through the end of September. Park gates will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. until the road is snowed in, Heikes said.
Mine tours will resume when the park reopens in early June.
