The Kenai Women's Resource and Crisis Center has just one major fund-raising event each year: the annual WRCC-KSRM Radiothon.
This year, the center will celebrate its 18th year of hosting the event, which will be broadcast today from 9 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. on KSRM, radio 920 AM.
WRCC Director Heather Arnette said the center relies heavily on the money the fund-raiser brings in to provide a wide range of services to women and children.
"We only have one big fund-raiser a year, and this is it," Arnette said.
She said without the support of volunteers, the radiothon wouldn't be able to take place.
"Most of the radiothon is organized by our volunteer board of directors," she said. "KSRM donates that day of radio, which is wonderful. It's awesome."
The real heroes of the radiothon, Arnette said, are the volunteer remote teams that canvass area businesses in search of donations.
"The remote teams really do all the work. They'll be out there all day."
Arnette said the radiothon also is the perfect forum to increase community awareness of the programs offered at the center, including support for women who are victims of sexual assault and domestic violence.
"We try to weave into it information on WRCC programs," she said.
