Posted: Thursday, September 09, 2004

Anchorage resident Sharon Georginna Knackstedt died Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2004, at Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage after a long illness. She was 56.

A celebration of her life will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 12, at the home of Laura Knackstedt, 2656 Beaver Loop Road in Kenai. Friends are invited to attend the informal gathering. Ms. Knackstedt's request was to have her ashes spread in British Columbia, Canada, where she was born.

Ms. Knackstedt was born to Ernie and Laura Knackstedt on July 4, 1948, in Port Alberni. In 1951, when she was 3, the Knackstedt family moved to Alaska and settled in Kenai.

Ms. Knackstedt grew up in Kenai on Beaver Loop Road along the banks of the Kenai River. She attended school in Kenai until she graduated from Kenai High School in 1967.

After graduation, she moved to Anchorage, where she attended community college and started her career with the state of Alaska. She retired from the Job Services office in 1996.

"Sharon loved Alaska's wildflowers and the flower beds that spring up every summer. She filled her home with all sorts of flowering plants. She also loved animals, especially cats. Her passion was reading books and playing cribbage," her family said.

Ms. Knackstedt was preceded in death by her father, Ernie.

She is survived by her mother, Laura Knackstedt; brother and sister-in-law, Darrell and Ellen Knackstedt; and brother, Willy Knackstedt; and many uncles, aunts and cousins in the United States and Canada.

Arrangements were made by Anchorage Funeral Home.
