PAXSON (AP) -- Thousands of gallons of diesel fuel spilled north of Paxson when a daytank was overfilled at an AT&T repeater site along the Richardson Highway, state environmental officials said Monday.
The spill was reported to the Department of Environmental Conservation on Monday. It wasn't known when it occurred. The excess fuel settled into the gravel pad below the generator building.
Contaminated gravel was removed and liner materials were placed at the site, according to DEC. Much of the perforated drainage system also was removed during the excavation process. And an excavator was brought in to build recovery trenches.
As of Monday, 575 gallons of fuel had been recovered.
