When the Blood Bank of Alaska Kenai Peninsula Center at the Blazy Mall in Soldotna opened last September 11th, there were already people waiting to donate blood and they kept coming until some folks had to be turned away.
"It was an overwhelming response, people were very patient, but we simply had more donors then we could accommodate," explained Jason Elson with Blood Bank. This year in memory of those who lost their lives in the 9-11 attack, a Memorial Blood Drive in House has been organized at the Kenai Peninsula Center and will run September 10th, 11th, and 12th from 10am-5pm each day.
"It's our way of commemorating the fallen heroes of September 11th, and it's an opportunity where everyone has the chance to be a hero and you don't have to give your life to save a life.
The reason for the three-day drive is to give everyone a chance to give blood that wants to donate. Also for donating during the 9-11 drive, we are giving each donor a 9-11 commemorative pin that the Blood Bank of Alaska has had especially designed for this memorial drive," said Elson.
Appointments may be made in advance by calling the Kenai Peninsula Center at 260-5672, however walk-ins will be welcome at the Blazy Mall anytime during the three-day event.
