Donor appreciation day, blood drive scheduled

The Blood Bank of Alaska will host a donor appreciation barbecue from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. today at Kenai Peninsula College. Community members are encouraged to attend and meet new staff members.

A blood drive in remembrance of 9-11 will be from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the center in the Blazy Mall. Pizza, a T-shirt giveaway and a drawing for a Kenai Fjords tour for two are some the the planned activities. For more information, call 260-5672.

PenDOG gearing up for classes

Peninsula Dog Obedience Group is taking sign-ups for classes in agility, beginning, intermediate, advanced and competition obedience, puppy kindergarten and clicker training.

Puppy kindergarten meets weekly and is always open to new students.

A free video hour also is held every Friday at 6 p.m.

The club's new location is on Kalifornsky Beach Road, next to CARTS.

Oktoberfest fund-raiser planned

The Kenai Elks will holds its fifth annual KDLL Oktoberfest fund-raiser at 7 p.m. Saturday at the lodge on Barnacle Way in Kenai. The evening will feature music by Alaska Blaskapelle, a nine-piece "oom-pah" band from Anchorage. Brats, sauerkraut, soup, "apfel kuchen," coffee, juice and a microbrew from the Homer Brewing Company will be served. Non-alcoholic drinks also will be available. Tickets are available at the Kenai Elks Lodge.

Fox Island cruise fund-raiser set

Kenai Peninsula United Way will hold a Kenai Fjords Fox Island Cruise fund-raiser at 2 p.m. Sunday in Seward. The cost is $50 per person and includes the afternoon cruise to Fox Island and dinner.

Live music, as well as outcry and bucket silent auctions, are some of the planned activities. For more information, call Amy at 283-9500.

WRCC fund-raiser set

The Women's Resource and Crisis Center will hold its 20th annual radiothon fund-raiser from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday on KSRM radio 92 AM. Cash and in-kind donations pledged during the radiothon will support the agency's services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, as well as its community and school prevention programs. Kenai River Working Group meeting canceled

The Kenai River Working Group meeting scheduled for 3 p.m. Monday at Soldotna City Hall has been canceled. For more information, call 260-4896.

Social Security reps to visit area

Social Security Administration representatives will be on the Kenai Peninsula from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at Seward City Hall; from noon to 4 p.m. Wednesday at Kenai City Hall; and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the Homer Senior Citizens Center. Top 40 Under 40 nominations sought

The Anchorage Chamber of Commerce and the Alaska Journal of Commerce are seeing nominations for the 2004 Alaska Top 40 Under 40 Awards, which recognize the state's top professionals who are younger than 40.

The deadline to nominate is Sept. 15. The selected individuals will be recognized in the Alaska Journal of Commerce and at an awards luncheon Oct. 25.

Disaster response group seeking volunteers

The Anchor Point Disaster Response Group is recruiting a VISTA position for next year through the AmeriCorps VISTA program.
