Nikiski blows past Delta Junction

Posted: Sunday, September 10, 2006

Nikiski improved to 2-1 in the Great Land Conference (3-2 overall) with a 39-0 shutout of Delta Junction (0-3 GLC, 1-4 overall) in Delta Saturday.

“It was a fun game for us,” Nikiski head coach Ned Clooten said following the win.

Evan Holloway and Beau Calderwood each scored two touchdowns for the Bulldogs, who outgained the Huskies 389-129 on the day.

Clooten said Nikiski tried to open up the passing game Saturday, and found good results against the Huskies.

“Two hundred twenty-seven yards passing is definitely something we can be happy with,” Clooten said.

Holloway caught touchdown passes of 39 and 34 yards, finishing with a game-high 153 receiving yards on six catches. Calderwood did his damage on the ground, running for 95 yards on only nine carries.

Wiley Bennett threw for 148 yards and one score for Nikiski, while Corey Smith racked up 79 passing yards and two touchdowns for the Bulldogs’ air attack.

Josh Vance had a touchdown reception for the Bulldogs, while Ian Krogseng had a good day kicking, knocking home a 34-yard field goal and four extra points.

Nikiski’s next game is a nonconference matchup against Northern Lights Conference squad Soldotna on Saturday at 2 p.m.
