Am I the only one looking over my shoulder wondering where summer went? I got up this morning and walked out on my deck and I could smell fall in the air.

I have heard that berry picking has been good in the Sterling area. Since berry pickers seem to guard their favorite picking spots as closely as fisherman keep their favorite fishing holes, I couldn't get anyone to give me directions too their best picking spots. Fortunately, one of the joys of berry picking is finding your own hidden bit of woods too pick in. I'm heading to my favorite spot to pick some low-bush cranberries before the voles eat them all this year.

While we are talking about the woods, I want to remind you to keep an eye out for bears. We seem to have an inordinate amount of bear activity in Sterling this fall. I have talked to multiple folks that have lost livestock to bears in the Robinson Loop area, and many more that have had bears in their yards.

Today and Tuesday, the Sterling Senior Center will be hosting a 55 Alive safe driving class. The class will be hosted by AARP and will run from 5 to 9 p.m. both nights. The center also will host the following events: Today Exercise at 10 a.m.; Tuesday Crafty Quilters at 9 a.m., fun crafts and endowment board meeting at 10 a.m.; Wednesday Exercise at 10 a.m., blood pressure check 11:30 a.m. and board of directors meeting 1 p.m.; Thursday Crafty Quilters at 9 a.m., fun crafts at 10 a.m. and card players at 6 p.m.; Friday exercise at 10 a.m. and steak dinner 6 p.m. For more information on these events you can call the center at 262-6808.

The Sterling Elementary School gym will be open for volleyball Wednesday nights from 7 to 9 p.m. beginning this week. Anyone age 16 and older who is interested in playing is welcome. For more information or to inquire about using the school after hours for other activities, call Connie Ferguson, RAVEN AmeriCORPS member, at 262-4944 Ext. 4239.

If you happen to see Jeanne Tridle or Bill Bolz today, Sept. 10, you may want to wish them a happy birthday! Jan Elser celebrates a birthday Sept. 13; Betty Orth on Sept. 14; Eldon Brandt on Sept. 15; and Laurene Walters on Sept. 16.

I hope you all get your favorite flavor of cake on your special day.

On a personal note, I'd like to welcome my sister home from a stay in the hospital. I think her family was almost as happy to have her home as her dog was. Keep feeling better Bobbi!

As always, send me an e-mail or give me a call by Wednesday evening to have your news printed in the paper the following week.
