Hunting accident wounds Soldotna man

Two Soldotna men were hunting black bear on Wednesday night out Funny River Road when one of their guns went off, striking the other in the back, according to Alaska State Troopers.

Medics brought Troy Weilbacher, 42, to Central Peninsula Hospital, where he was treated for non life-threatening injuries, according to troopers.

Troopers believe the shooting was accidental, but did not release the alleged shooter's name because he is a suspect that could face criminal charges.

"It doesn't mean we thought it was intentional, but it's still a serious thing when your actions result in someone getting shot," Capt. Peter Mlynarik said.

The hunting partner reported the incident around 9:30 p.m. after his handgun discharged into Weilbacher about a mile down Salmon Run Road, according to troopers.
