Area golfers battle showers to complete Kenai-Birch Ridge tourney

Tin cups runneth over with rain

Seventy-three golfers met under clear skies Saturday to participate in the fifth Kenai and Birch Ridge Dual Association Tournament. Sunday's cold rain trimmed the number of golfers and, according to many players, added to scores.

The event drew more golfers than ever before, according to Phil Stefanides, the tournament director. Participants played at both the Kenai and Birch Ridge golf courses for strokes toward their own scores as well as for their respective clubs.

Stefanides planned to have the losing club sing "For they are jolly good fellows" to the winning club, but weary, rain-soaked Birch Ridge members, who lost, were not receptive to the idea at Sunday's awards ceremony.

The rain kept at least one player home and drove several golfers off both courses. It also left pools of water on several greens.

"It's exactly the same weather I found at the top of the Chilkoot Trail about two weeks ago," joked golfer Myrna Cowan, "and it was just as miserable then."

The bad weather did nothing to sour Eldon Harvey's weekend. He enjoyed a tremendous lead after Saturday, with a 3-over 72 at Birch Ridge. Several golfers were catching up on the back nine at Kenai Golf Course Sunday. Stefanides said the weather might level the playing field.

"Anything's possible at Kenai," he said, "especially with this weather."

Harvey prevailed in the tournament, with a 36-hole gross score of 152.

In the ladies flight, Rita Botelho had the lowest gross score with 183. Pamela Martinez won for lowest net score, with 147.

Low net winners in the men's first flight were Ken Liedes, Rene Alvarez and Mark Azzara, all with 149 and ranked in that order. A draw was held to determine places and prizes.

Low net winners in the men's second flight were Dwight Kramer with 151, Lee Hankins with 152 and Mark McComsey with 154.

Low net winners in the men's third flight were Tim Moeglein in first with 146, Steve Hammarstrom in second with 146 and Bill Stamps in third with 147.

Low net winners in the men's fourth flight were Alvin J. Glidden with 146, Ray Hamby with 148 and Ron Rozak with 153.

In the ladies flight, the low net winners were Pamela Martinez with 147, Paula Crowley with 151 and Chiya Bazan with 156.

Gift certificates to the Kenai Golf Course and Birch Ridge were provided as prizes.
