Experimental airplane crashes, pilot injured

ANCHORAGE (AP) -- An experimental plane crashed Sunday night, injuring the pilot, Anchorage police said.

The plane was taking off from the Birchwood airport north of Anchorage when the accident occurred shortly before 6 p.m. about 45 feet west of the runway, police said.

Witnesses told police that the plane climbed to about 50 feet before it appeared to stall. It flipped after hitting the ground.

Joe Burnham, 47, suffered two broken legs, a broken ankle and facial lacerations, police said. He was taken to Alaska Regional Hospital.
