Moose hunters, beware.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is strictly enforcing the speed limit on Swanson River Road with a new Talon radar gun donated by Unocal. The limit is 35 mph along the entire length of the road.
Excessive speed can mean the difference between a minor accident and a fatal one, Kenai National Wildlife Refuge officials said. Speed was a factor in a fatal accident on Swanson River Road about three years ago. The refuge frequently receives complaints of speeders on the road.
"The road is a typical rural Alaska road, which winds along through the foothills, and due to several sharp curves, people speeding have the potential to cause real problems," said Jim Hall, deputy refuge manager. "Unocal is to be commended for this purchase-donation of a radar gun."
Chris Myers, Unocal Alaska field superintendent, said Unocal is committed to the safety of its workers and the public.
