Chorus looking for members

The Kenai Peninsula Orchestra is accepting community members to join the community chorus that will perform Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana" in April.

Registration and rehearsals for the chorus start in January. Singers in the central Kenai Peninsula can register for a community chorus class at Kenai Peninsula College so they can learn the music and rehearse locally until the rehearsals begin in Homer in January.

The class meets Monday and Thursday nights in November and December at the college. The class can be taken for college credit or for no credit, though some fees apply either way. The class begins Nov. 4, but anyone interested in taking it needs to register at the college soon.

Anyone interested in joining the Kenai Peninsula Orchestra can call Maria Allison at 283-3024. The orchestra rehearses in Ninilchik.

For more information, call Jean Brockel at 262-4084 or Maria Allison at 283-3024.

Song of the Year deadline nears

The deadline to enter the eighth annual Song of the Year Contest, put on by the Alaska Public radio Network, is Friday. This statewide event helps artists gain recognition of their work, provides feedback to songwriters and helps to raise money for APRN.

Songwriters can enter their original songs in one of the 16 different categories and have a chance to win prizes, including gift certificates from Mammoth Musical Instruments as well as studio time at Mirror Studios.

Category winners and top five finalists will be invited to perform their song at the annual Song of the Year Concert at the Sydney Lawrence Theater in November.

This year, the winner of the country category will be invited to open for national artist Nashville Underground when they play in Anchorage in November.

Regional judging will be conducted in Anchorage, Juneau and Fairbanks.

For complete contest information, including entry forms, rules, regulations, past winners and a list of categories, log onto the APRN Web site at, or call (800) 752-APRN to request an entry form.
