Former longtime Soldotna resident Donald Gene Baxter died Sunday, Sept. 9, 2007, at his home in Irrigon, Ore., from complications of Multiple Sclerosis. He was 55.
A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, at Columbia View Church in Irrigon. A reception will be held following the service at Stokes Landing Senior Center in Irrigon.
Mr. Baxter was born to Cletus and Idean Baxter on June 16, 1952, along with his identical brother.
"He married his high school sweetheart, Bonnie, in 1970 and shared 37 wonderful years together," his family said.
The couple had two daughters. He served in the Air Force and was a decorated veteran.
"The past four years, even though he was severely disabled, he served two terms mayor of Irrigon. One of his most cherished accomplishments was building a world-class bike and skate park for all the local children, which he received the honor of the town naming it after him," his family said.
Mr. Baxter is survived by his wife; daughters, Barbara Ann Shipps and her husband, Willie, and Lisa Marie Legner and her husband, Jesse; grandchildren, Markayla and Courtney Shipps, Samantha Weber and Quinn, Gavin and Connor Legner; father; siblings, Dan Baxter and his wife, Linda, Betty Hilton and her husband, Stan, and Ron Baxter and his wife, Val; and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the families suggests donations be made to Irrigon Skate/Bike Park or Irrigon Friends of the Library at 195 S.E. Ninth St. Irrigon, OR 97844.
