Log bed, cash fundraiser slated

The Skyview High School volleyball team will raffle a log bed or the $450 cash equivalent. Tickets are $10 each and may be purchased from Skyview players or by calling Kit Lamborn at 252-9023 or 260-3083.

Proceeds will help with travel expenses for the season.

Books needed for troops overseas

The Soldotna Rotary Club is looking for books to send to U.S. troops serving overseas. As part of the club's troop support program, used or new books in good condition, or funds to offset shipping costs, may be dropped off at KDLL Pickle Hill Radio in Kenai, Integrity Surveys in Kenai or Blazy Construction in Soldotna. Developmental screenings offered

Frontier Community Services will hold free developmental screenings for children ages birth to 3 years old from 2 to 7 p.m. today at its office at the Red Diamond Center, Suite 16. For more information, call 714-6647.

Soldotna library to be discussed

The Friends of the Joyce K. Carver Memorial Library will meet at 5 p.m. today at Soldotna City Hall. The topic will be the status of the conceptual design for the library expansion, report on a recent raffle, future library social events, membership drives and fundraisers.

Disc golf tourney set

The Kenai Eagle Open Disc Golf tournament will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Kenai Disc Golf Course. A players meeting will begin at 9:45 a.m.

The tournament is Kenai's first PDGA sanctioned event. The cost is $25 for amateurs and $40 for professionals. There will be three amateur divisions: recreational, intermediate and advanced. A women's division also will be open.

Soldotna Historical society to meet

The Soldotna Historical Society will meet for a membership meeting and fall fling at 11 a.m. Saturday at the main building on Centennial Park Road. The board of directors will meet at 9 a.m. to cover business items.

The business meeting will be followed by a lunch of hamburgers, hot dogs and beverages will be provided. Members are asked to bring a salad or dessert. Featured speakers will be Al Hershberger and Ed Back. Their topic will be local ham operators. It is open to the community.

Steak dinner fundraiser

The Kenai River Brown Bears Junior A Hockey team will host a steak dinner fundraiser from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the Soldotna Sports Center. The evening events include prize opportunities, meeting the team's mascot, photos with the players, player autographs and the annual Green vs. White Green Game that will follow at 7:30 p.m.

The cost is $15 per person. Tickets are available at Alaska Fudge and Gifts, next door to Dairy Queen in Soldotna.

Lifeguard class offered

The Nikiski pool will hold an American Red Cross Lifeguard class starting Tuesday. Cost of class is $135 or you may sign up for its training aquatic professionals program and the fee may be waived.

Teen writers sought

The Clarion is seeking students in grades nine through 12 from central peninsula high schools interested in writing for its Verbatim column. The column is designed to let teens voice their opinions on topics that affect their daily life -- home, family, school, peers, social pressures, ect. The column length is 350 words minimum and 500 words maximum.

Deadline to submit a sample column for consideration is 5 p.m. Thursday. Submissions must include first and last name, school, grade, mailing address and contact phone number. Late or incomplete submissions will not be considered. Entries must be e-mailed to schools@peninsulaclarion.com.

A POW/MIA anniversary ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. Sept. 19 at the American Legion Hall at 902 Cook St. in Kenai.The ceremony will honor POWs/MIAs of wars and conflicts throughout the years.
