Bears earn split

The Kenai River Brown Bears opened the 2010-11 North American Hockey League campaign by splitting a two-game series with the Alaska Avalanche of Palmer. The Avs won Friday's game 5-2 at the Palmer Ice Arena before Kenai River came back to win Saturday's contest 3-0 at the Subway Sports Center in Anchorage.

Brett Lubanski, Doug Beck and Brad Duwe each had two points in the Brown Bears' win. Goaltender Josh Benton turned aside each of Alaska's 16 shots.

Beck started the scoring with a power-play goal in the first period. Sean Muller and Lubanski added goals in the second period.

On Friday, Alaska's Jacob Barber started the scoring in the first period. Zach Smith notched a power-play goal five minutes into the second period to give the Avs a 2-0 lead.

Lubanski answered back with a power-play tally of his own nine minutes later. Barber added his second goal of the night to give Alaska a 3-1 lead after two periods.

Duwe scored on the power play at the 13:21 mark of the third period to cut Alaska's lead to one. The Avs added two empty net goals in the final minute to seal the win. One was by Barber to cap off his hat trick. Evan Hesse scored the other empty netter with two seconds left on the clock.

Alaska goaltender Landon Peterson turned away 32 of 34 shots faced. Kenai River's Mathias Dahlstrom stopped 23 of 26 shots.
