The Kenai Peninsula United Way will hold its annual campaign kick-off reception at the Kenai Senior Citizens Center today from 6 to 8 p.m. The event is free. There will be entertainment, door prizes and refreshments. For more information, call 283-9500.

Events and Exhibits

Planned Parenthood of Alaska is holding its second annual Harvest Art Show through Sept. 22 at the Kenai Fine Arts Center in Old Town Kenai. The exhibit showcases works of area artists in multimedia. There will be a Gala Auction Sept. 22 from 7 to 9 p.m. For more information, contact Jackie or Jen at 262-2622. The Kenai Fine Arts Center is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Alaska SeaLife Center in Seward is featuring works by Karla Morreira, an artist from Chugiak. For more information, contact Lynn Nappi at (907) 224-6301.

Kaladi Brothers in Soldotna has Rube Tikka and Dottie Sanders as its artists of the month.

The Kenai Visitors and Cultural Center displays ethnographic material from Athabaskan, Yupik Eskimo and Aleut cultures. The cultural history room also has items on exhibit that represent the Russian eras, the homesteading period, gold mining and oil production on the Kenai. The center's natural history room displays "the king of snags" taken from the Kenai River, and birds, fish and wildlife indigenous to the area. Admission to the center is free. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays.

Artwork by Kenai Peninsula artists can be viewed and purchased at the following area businesses: Artworks, Birch Tree Gallery, Claudette's Folk Art and Collectables, Malfunction Junction Gifts and Northcountry Fair in Soldotna, Alaskan Gift and Gallery and Fireweed Herb Garden in Kenai and Peninsula Furs Inc. in Sterling.

The Soldotna Historical Society Homesteader Village and Museum is open through Monday. Hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., except Sunday, which is from noon to 4 p.m. The museum is on Centennial Park Road in Soldotna. For more information, call 262-3832.

Old Town Village Restaurant features historic pictures of the early days in Kenai.

The Kenai National Wildlife Refuge Information Center is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and weekends from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. There are many scenic hiking trails, including the Kenai River trail, which begins near the center. The center is on Ski Hill Road near the intersection of the Sterling Highway and Funny River Road in Soldotna. For more information, call 262-7021.

Entertainment

Sackett's Roadhouse Grill in Sterling will have music by Mike Morgan at 7 p.m. Friday. For reservations, call 260-5208.

Kaladi Brothers in Soldotna will have music by Mike Morgan at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.

The Rainbow Bar in Kenai presents the Mabrey Brothers every Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 10 p.m.

The Katmai in Kenai presents karaoke with Sherri on Fridays at 9 p.m. Ladies night karaoke is Tuesdays.

George's Casino in Kenai has a DJ playing Top 40 music every Tuesday through Saturday at 9:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday there is live music.

The Riverside House in Soldotna presents "After 10," a dance party, Friday and Saturday nights. DJ Ian will play favorite Top 40 dance music until 5 a.m.

Upcoming Events

The Kenai Visitors and Cultural Center will present "Earth, Fire and Fibre," a traveling juried art exhibit for the media of clay, fiber, wood, stone, bone, ivory, glass and metal. The exhibit runs Sept. 21 through Oct. 26 and consists of 53 pieces by 45 artists from 15 Alaska communities, including Homer and Kasilof. For more information, call 283-1991.

Down the Road

"In the Pink," paintings by Shirley Timmreck, will be featured at the Fireweed Gallery Friday through Monday.

The Pratt Museum presents "Bead International," a juried art exhibit from around the world, through Sept. 20. Creations using anything pierced as the media are displayed in the museum's changing exhibits gallery.

Anchorage Events

The Anchorage Museum of History and Art will hold an After Hours event featuring special tours of "Distant Shores," led by Doug Capra, today from 6:30 to 9 p.m.

The Saturday Market, featuring area produce and hand crafts, will be held every Saturday through September on Third Avenue and E Street. For more information, call (907) 276-7207.
