Dersham appointment gives reader qualms

Posted: Tuesday, September 13, 2005

Another misguided political appointment will empower Ed Dersham to machinate on commercial fisheries policies. What does a former D.E.A. agent-saltwater guide know about commercial fishery division?

As a fishboard member Dersham voted to remove the commercial fishing priority in Cook Inlet, authored a coho plan at an out of cycle meeting while conflicted, met clandestinely with Kenai River Guides while a member of Governor Murkowski's transition team resource committee, said the board of fish did not have money for a winter king salmon task force yet held many out of cycle meetings including some for managing halibut. Two years with the department and Ed will have a nice retirement.

One thing you are not going to hear is Cook Inlet gillnetters breaking into a chorus of " What a Friend We Have in Dersham!" Once again here we have the best worst example of a political appointment. Certainly Commissioner McKie Campbell could have turned over a few more rocks and selected a more qualified less biased candidate.
