Climbing for Kids tournament a success

Posted: Wednesday, September 13, 2006

On Aug. 19, Cancer Survivors on Mount Aspiring 2007, Climbing for Kids held its first disc golf tournament at the Kenai Eagle Disc Golf Course in Kenai. The clouds parted, the sun shone and fun was had by all who participated; but most importantly, enough money was raised to send 30 children fighting cancer to camps designed to meet their medical needs while having lots of outdoor fun.

This was only possible with the support of so many in our community.

Thanks to all the teams: Kaladi Brothers, Freedom Realty, Batir Construction, Creative Designs, law office of Robert J. Molloy, Hutchings Chevrolet, Kenai Peninsula Outdoors Club, Nikiski Fire Department Station 2, Kenai Fire Department, Kenai Police Department, Soldotna Police Department, Central Peninsula General Hospital, Doors & Windows, Sal’s, Anchorage Daily News, Tele Babes and the Tele Babes’ “Babes.”

Our fabulous and caring hole sponsors were: Barker Wood Products, BP, Choice Realty, Jay’s Painting, Justin Moore, Peninsula Insta Care, Peninsula Internal Medicine PC, Professional Home IV, Soldotna Pharmacy, Southcentral Title and Spenard Builders Supply in Soldotna.

Fantastic local musicians provided great sounds all afternoon, thanks to James Glaves, Sonny Ogle, Sara Superman, Keeley Boyle and Nelson Kempf, Jesse Glaves and Pinkerton Dillard.

Thanks to all the young adults who kept things flowing out on the course. Delicious food was donated by Three Bears and Country Foods. Thanks to Agrium for the use of their barbecue grill. Thanks to Jim Dawson and the crew that helped with tables, chairs and tent set up. Thanks to the Peninsula Oilers for letting us use their parking lot. Thanks to the Batir “guys” for all their help setting up and taking down.

Door prizes were donated by Agrium, Beemun’s, Claudette’s, Ferguson’s, Fish Happens, Fowler’s Dirtworks, Frames & Things, Kenai Yoga, North Country Fair, RK Corporation, Kristine Schmidt, Spenard Builders Supply, Pete Sprague, Stylistix, Subway, Summer Inn Bed & Breakfast and Veronica’s.

Thanks to The Crossing restaurant for our prize for the team who raised the most money. Thank you to Sherman Signs for our great banner and all the signs. Last but not least, a big thanks to Kenai Parks & Recreation Department for their assistance in making this a fun and safe event for everyone.
