ANCHORAGE (AP) -- The managing editor of the Seward Phoenix Log has been named editor in chief of Alaska Newspapers Inc., the company announced Thursday.

Alex DeMarban moves into the spot that had been held by former editor James MacPherson, who left the paper earlier this year.

Before working at the newspaper in Seward, DeMarban was the managing editor of the Dutch Harbor Fisherman. He is a graduate of the College of Journalism at the University of Texas at Austin.

DeMarban says he hopes to bring a stronger community focus to the newspapers with increased local coverage. He will assume his new duties in early October.

Nancy Erickson, a reporter at the Seward Phoenix Log, will take over as managing editor of the paper.

In addition to The Dutch Harbor Fisherman and the Log, Alaska Newspapers Inc. owns The Cordova Times, The Valdez Vanguard, The Bristol Bay Times, The Tundra Drums in Bethel and The Arctic Sounder, covering Kotzebue and Barrow.

Calista Corp. is the majority owner of the chain.
