Scouting books, uniforms sought

The Cub Scout Pack 654 and Boy Scout Troop 659 of Nikiski are seeking scouting books and uniforms (new or used) for the Hurricane Katrina scouting survivors.

The drive is being held in conjunction with the Houston, Texas Pack 197.

Donation boxes are located at Nikiski North Star Elementary, Nikiski Middle-High School and North Star Methodist Church. For more information, call Carol Strickland at 776-5683.

Recycling meeting set

Anyone interested in being involved in local recycling is invited to a Re-Group Meeting at 6:30 p.m. today in the commons at Kenai Peninsula College. For more information, call Jan 262-5098.

Peace group plans activities

People for Peace and Justice will host the following discussions: Kim Terpening will give a presentation about her recent trip to Camp Casey in Crawford, Texas at 7 p.m. today at River City Books; and Anchorage-based journalist Karen Button will discusses her work in the Ruweished refugee camp in Jordan and her coverage of the World Tribunal on Iraq in Istanbul at 7 p.m. Friday at the Kenai Visitors and Cultural Center. Candidates’ forum scheduled

The League of Women Votes will sponsor a candidates’ forum Thursday at the borough building in Soldotna. School board candidates will speak at 6:30 p.m., assembly candidates at 7:20 p.m. and mayoral candidates at 8:25 p.m. There also will be time for audience questions. Refreshments will be served. Sterling coalition to meet

Youth basketball league forming

North Peninsula Recreation is taking registrations for its Nikiski Youth Basketball league from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Sept. 30 at the Nikiski pool or from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Tuesday and Sept. 21 at Nikiski North Star Elementary School.

Youth in grades three through six are eligible to participate. Interleague teams also are available. For more information please call 776-8800.

Teen night slated

North Peninsula Recreation will host a Teen Night for youth ages 13 to 18 Sept. 23 at the Nikiski Community Recreation Center. Activities will include open gym, foosball, pool, ping-pong, video games, movies and other activities. The cost of admission is $2 per person. For more information, call 776-8800.
