Venetie man missing during moose hunt

Posted: Sunday, September 16, 2001

FAIRBANKS (AP) -- Alaska State Troopers and volunteers are searching for a Venetie man who disappeared on a hunting trip on the Christian River Monday morning.

Jeremiah Peter, 25, was last seen Sept. 9 night by his hunting partner, Lance Whitwell, 35, of Venetie. The two had begun a moose hunting trip that day and had spent a night at their hunting camp on the river about 50 miles east of Venetie.

The next morning, Peter was gone, along with a rifle and some supplies.

Whitwell could not find any trace of Jeremiah Peter. By Tuesday afternoon four boats from Venetie and six from Fort Yukon were out searching.

Troopers and the Civil Air Patrol began searching Wednesday.

Pete Peter, the missing man's brother, said Jeremiah Peter is a construction worker and laborer in Venetie and that he recently returned from a summer spent fighting fires in Idaho.

Venetie is about 160 miles north of Fairbanks.
