Former Soldotna resident Robert G. Meeks Sr. died Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2000, in Orlando, Fla. He was 79.
He was born June 17, 1921, in Adrian, Ga. He moved to Kenai in 1967 and worked as an ironworker with Local 751. He was a member and helped to build the Masonic Lodge in Soldotna.
He belonged to Masonic Lodge 329 and the Bahia Shrine Temple. While living in Kenai, he was a member of the First Baptist Church of Kenai and Kenai Baptist Temple. In 1981, he left Alaska to retire near his children and grandchildren.
"Even after leaving, he made many trips back to Alaska to visit family and pursue his love of fishing. He has left his family with memories of love for family and friends, and he will never be forgotten," the family wrote.
He is survived by his wife and best friend, Elaine Meeks, of Orlando; son and daughter-in-law, Robert G. Jr. and Carol Meeks, of Orlando; daughter and son-in-law, Elzine (Sity) and Randy Van Sickle, of Marietta, Ga.; granddaughters Cheree and Angie; great-grandchildren Drew and Cole, of Orlando; brothers and sisters-in-law A.D. and Pennie Meeks, of Kenai, J.L. and Billie Meeks, of Abilene, Texas, and L.R. and Kathy Meeks, of Eustis, Fla.
Memorial arrangements were made by Cox-Parker Funeral Home, Winter Park, Fla.
