The host Nikiski volleyball team won Region III/3A matches on Friday and Saturday to improve its region record to 4-0 and its overall record to 5-2.

Friday, the Bulldogs breezed past defending Class 3A state champion Grace Christian 15-3, 15-3 and 15-7.

Nikiski coach Cherrie Hobart-Verkuilen was glad to see her team play a solid match after a disappointing loss to Skyview on Sept. 9.

"I felt like they looked at it as a chance for redemption after last week," Hobart-Verkuilen said of her team. "They also felt it was a chance to make a statement about our level in the region."

Laura Berdahl paced the Bulldogs with four kills, while the whole team served 96 percent.

"The whole team played really well," Hobart-Verkuilen said. "All the kids did their job and did it well."

Saturday, Nikiski recorded an easy victory over Anchorage Christian Schools. The scores were 15-1, 15-1 and 15-5. Berdahl had 11 kills, while Laura-Beth Covich continued solid play as a setter.

"She's been concentrating on her footwork," Hobart-Verkuilen said of Covich. "It was definitely evident she's been focusing on it so much. She really picked it up."

Nikiski travels to take on Seward, also undefeated in the region, on Tuesday.

"We know we've got our work cut out for us," Hobart-Verkuilen said. "We know we have to go down and play hard, mistake-free volleyball."
