Alaska Gov. Tony Knowles has named Sept. 24-30 as Employ the Older Worker Week for the state of Alaska and encourages citizens to recognize the contributions that older workers make to the workplace and to our economy.

Alaska is witnessing a dramatic growth in its mature and older worker population. Many Alaskans are living longer, healthier lives. This trend will continue as increasing life expectancy and better health among our older population alter the very definition of old age and retirement.

Employers across the state, in both the public and private sectors, need to be aware of the changing dynamics of Alaska's work force and need to renew focus on the qualifications, dependability and skills of the older worker. It is important to recognize the valuable resource we share in our older workers and to expand our efforts to eliminate all forms of age discrimination in the workplace.
