Jury selection was set to begin this morning in the 1994 murder of a Kenai Peninsula couple near Nikiski.

On trial in Kenai District Court for two counts of first-degree murder and three counts of tampering with physical evidence is Billy D. Smith, 41, formerly of Anchor Point.

Smith is charged with the murders of Harold Enzler, 36, of Nikiski, and Nancy Bellamy, 42, of Homer.

Smith reportedly confessed to investigators in August 1997, that he and two accomplices lured Enzler and Bellamy to an area north of Kenai on March 27, 1994, and Smith allegedly shot the couple with a 9mm pistol. The bodies were never recovered.

Smith has been incarcerated at Wildwood Pretrial Facility. He is being held on $500,000 bail.
