Tornado defeat Bears

The Texas Tornado netted three power-play goals in their 5-3, come-from-behind win over the Kenai River Brown Bears in the North American Hockey League Showcase Tournament at Schwans Super Rink in Blaine, Minn., on Thursday. Kenai River falls to 1-1 in the tournament and 2-2 on the season.

Texas took a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes of play in a first period that featured three power-play goals. Texas' David Rigatti scored the first less than three minutes into the game. The Brown Bears tied the game less than three minutes later on a goal by Erik Persson. Brett Lubanski and Chris Rial added the assists. J.D. Howard scored a late goal with just over two minutes left in the first to give the Tornado the lead.

Goals by Daniel Turgeon and Lubanski put Kenai River ahead 3-2 after the second period. Turgeon's tally came nearly nine minutes into the period. Rial and Josh Royston had the helpers. Brad Duwe and Doug Beck assisted on Lubanski's goal, which came about four minutes after Turgeon's.

Texas scored three times in the third period to seal the victory. Howard added his second goal of the game just over six minutes into the period. Mico Solorzano later scored a power-play goal and Rock Einersen added an empty-netter to round out the scoring.

Texas was 3-of-7 on the man advantage. Kenai River was 1-of-3. The Tornado more than doubled Kenai River's shot total. They threw 41 shots on net to the Brown Bears' 16.

Josh Hillegas made 13 saves for the Tornado, while Josh Benton turned aside 36 shots for the Brown Bears. This was Benton's first loss in net this year.

Kenai River takes on the Michigan Warriors today at 1:45 p.m. Alaska Daylight Time and finishes the showcase against the Coulee Region Chill on Saturday at 10 a.m. ADT.

The Schwan Super Rink is the largest ice arena of its kind in the world and features eight sheets of ice under one roof.
