ANCHORAGE (AP) -- A year-old girl drowned in a bucket of water in Chevak, Alaska State Troopers said.
Troopers in Bethel were investigating the death Sunday of Mary A. Bell. An initial investigation revealed that the baby drowned in a 5-gallon bucket that was half-filled with water.
The baby's mother apparently was asleep at the time, and was woken by her 3-year-old son who found the baby upside down in the bucket, troopers said.
Troopers said the mother to resuscitate the girl while the Chevak health aide was alerted.
The village health aide also tried to resuscitate the baby, but without success.
The girl's body was sent to Anchorage for an autopsy.
