ANCHORAGE (AP) -- A 32-year-old man was arrested for the shooting death of his wife in the Talkeetna area over the weekend, Alaska State Troopers said Monday.

Dead is Irene Davenport, 40, who lived in a cabin with her husband near Mile 99.5 of the Parks Highway, near the junction of the Talkeetna spur road.

Troopers said Davenport's husband, Rex Davenport, called them about 7 p.m. Saturday to report his wife had shot herself in the head with a pistol during a domestic dispute.

But troopers who responded said the evidence indicated it was Rex Davenport who had shot his wife. He was arrested six hours after the initial call and charged with first-degree murder.

Davenport was arraigned Sunday. Bail was set at $250,000.

An autopsy was scheduled for Monday.
