Some concerned citizens have called the city of Soldotna to ask why, in this time of national crisis, the city is not flying the American flags that flew over downtown during the summer.
Soldotna Mayor Dave Carey has a simple explanation: The poles have a design that prevents them from flying flags at half mast.
"We absolutely will not put flags up at full staff. So we can't have the flags up," he said.
When the national mourning period ends and the other flags are restored to the tops of their poles, the city will consider putting up the additional banners.
"It would be really inappropriate for anyone to think we are being disrespectful," Carey said.
