Kelsoe joins Army
Former Seward resident Army Pvt. Shontele M. Kelsoe graduated basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.
During the nine weeks of training she studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training. She also learned drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches and field training exercises.
She is the daughter of Shontele Kelsoe (Shields) and a 2005 graduate of Seward Middle-High School.
Main deploys to Korea
Former Kenai resident Pvt. Richard Geordon Wilson graduated in July with the CCo. 787th Battalion in Fort Leonardwood, Mo. He deployed Aug. 27 for a one-year tour of duty in Korea.
He is the son of Rich-ard and Sheryl Main.
Sausedo deploys to Iraq
Former Sterling resident Pvt. Scott Sausedo recently deployed to Iraq after a brief military leave to visit his family. Sausedo is stationed at Ft. Carson, Colorado Springs, Colo., with the 1/3 ACR.
He is the son of Mic-hael and Cindy Sau-sedo and grandson of Lynn Wetzel of Kenai.
Todd returns stateside
Former Soldotna resident Navy Seaman Tim Z. Todd returned from a three-month deployment while assigned to the amphibious assault ship U.S.S. Saipan, homeported in Norfolk, Va. The U.S.S. Saipan was involved in Exercise Adriatic Engagement with forces from Albania and Macedonia on Sazan Island off the coast of Albania. Saipan also took part in the 100th anniversary of Norway's independence.
He is the son of Connie S. Todd of Soldotna. Todd joined the Navy in February 2004.
White joins Marines
Former Kenai resident, Pfc. Jeremy Allen White recently graduated from the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego on Sept. 2. He joined the Marines through the Delayed Entry Program in 2004.
White is attending the School of Infantry at Camp Pendleton in California.
He is the son of Jennifer and Brian Calhoun, grandson of Russell White and brother to Jessica, Jannelle, Jenna, Justin, Kris and Taylor, all of Kenai.
White is a 2005 graduate of Kenai Central High School.
Scholarship semifinalists announced
Semifinalists in the 2006 National Merit Scholarship Program are:
Kenai Central High School Benjamin A. Boycott;
Skyview High School Rebecca L. Kilfoyle; and
Soldotna High School Trevor W. Kauffman.
More than 1.3 million juniors in 21,000 U.S. high schools entered the program by taking the 2004 preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Semifinalists, who represent less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, include the highest scoring entrants in each state.
To become a finalist, a semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school. To be endorsed and recommended by the school principal, and earn SAT scores that confirm the student's earlier qualifying test performance.
